Choosing and registering a domain

• You might have already picked a suitable domain name for your website. But that name might be taken already. So, first thing that needs to be done is – checking domain availability. Go to www.namecheap.com and check availability by entering your desired domain name into search field.
• You can play around as long as you like, trying out different domain names. Namecheap will suggest similar domain names if the search term is already taken. You can check Premium Domains if interested, right below Suggestions. Premium domains are domains with significant amount of traffic and reputation and they are costly. At the end – once you decided your domain name – you want to register it.
• Before registering domain you will be prompted to register with Namecheap first. Right after domain registration you will receive an e-mail receipt with all the info. Voila – you are a domain owner!

How to set up a Website – Step 2:
Registering a host

• Visit www.hostgator.com and chose one of the hosting plans that suit your needs the most. There are several reasons why you should register with Hostgator. Beautiful control panel, cheap service, unlimited diskspace and bandwidth, huge number of free website templates and 0-24 online technical support. And is dirty cheap. There can be found totally free hosting services – but I don’t recommend them, as you will want your website up all the time – and in case of a problem – you want answers. Choose your hosting plan based on your needs. Personally, I like Business Plan because of private IP address, but if you need just 1 website – go for Hatchling plan.

Once you have registered a host, you will receive an e-mail from them with all info needed -

• Your control panel URL
• Your Domain URL
• Your Username
• Your Password
• Your IP
• Your 1st Nameserver
• Your 2nd Nameserver

• Now we need to connect our domain with the host. Go back to www.namecheap.com, log in and you will be at Namecheap – Member’s Home. On the left side you will see your account information. Right below is the field – QUICKLY MODIFY ONE OF YOUR DOMAINS. Type your domain name into the field (domainname.com) and click MODIFY. 3rd row from the top is DNS transfer. Click it and copy/paste Your 1st Nameserver and Your 2nd Nameserver that Hostgator sent you. Voila – you have registered and connected a host with your domain!

How to set up a Website – Step 3:
Installing WordPress

• Log in into your Webhost Manager Control panel (you have URL and username/password sent from Hostgator via e-mail). Based on the type of your host plan, you will want to assign/modify desired disc space, bandwidth and number of SQL databases that you will need. If you encounter any problem – Hostgator online technical support is always there for you.
• Now type www.YOURDOMAINNAME.com/cpanel. That will bring you to control panel of your domain. Check how many SQL Databases are allowed on the left column (If you have 0/0 in that field – go back to Webhost manager CP and modify SQL databases number to 1). Start Fantastico De Luxe – choose WordPress and follow the installation steps. You will receive e-mail with all the administrator information you need.

How to set up a Website – Step 4:
Installing WordPress Templates

• Type in the URL field – www.YOURDOMAINNAME.com/wp-admin – that will open up a WordPress log in screen for your website. Type your username and password that you got in e-mail. And you are now in WordPress admin area of your website.
• Go to Appearance – Install Themes – refine your seach if you like and you will be presented with variety of website templates that you can install on your website. Search engine algorithms are constantly changing and improving and people don’t have to go to directory listings anymore to find your website under some category. They just type their phrases into Google and – find exactly what they are looking for.

Search engines were focused more on number of backlinks to your website back then, but quality content and good on-page optimization can do miracles today. No longer high PR (page rank) defined by Google plays crucial part either. And with combining proper link building with choosing right keywords and clean on-page SEO it is much easier to beat competition.

What is a link?

Link is a piece of code on a website that points to another website or page. It has an anchor text (a text contained within the link)

• Internal link is a link that is specifically pointing from one page on your site to another page on your site
• External link is a link from another website that points to your website or page

When talking about link building – I am referring to external linking mostly.

So, what exactly link building is?

Link building is essentially a voting system. Growing the number of your website or web page links on other websites gives your site some importance by “association”. Meaning – higher ranked websites with some authority will give better references to your site via links. Search engines obviously care a a lot how many people is referring to your web pages, and in what context. Link is actually one of the relevancy factors when determining your site position.

Five main link building techniques:

1. Submitting your website to directory listings

Directory submissions were very important factor for higher ranking, specially placing your link on high PR directory lists. Today this is just a part of your link building business strategy.

It will ad to your authority, and improve the amount of websites pointing back to yours but it will not ad the kind of impact the anchor text that points to one of your pages does.

Directory submissions are almost always pointed to your main domain, so make sure you use your main keywords.

There are 2 types of directory submissions

• High End (usually paid) directory submissions – done only once and never again (like DMOZ, Yahoo, Botw). DMOZ is free – although it takes time to be accepted as it is human edited, sometimes even couple of months – just be persistent. Yahoo and Botw are paid directories that I recommend you try to get listed on. You don’t have to do it as soon as you set up your website, but keep in mind that being listed on those 3 will give an edge on search engine rankings. So, once you start getting some income from your website, go ahead and get listed on paid Yahoo and Botw directories. Smart link building.
• Normal – submitting to normal directories is best done on continual basis. It has to become a part of your natural consisting link building process. Most directories are human edited and it takes time to be accepted, some require e-mail authorization after submission, some accept your link right away.

Best way to get natural link building is to submit to 5-10 directories every day. It will take 5-10 minutes of your time doing it manually. All you need is to type your Title, short Description and URL.

You want 1-way links and never engage in reciprocal link submissions. There are thousands of free directory lists that you can submit your website to. Just type “free directories” in Google and you will find a bunch. I suggests keeping track of  directories you submitted to.

Methods for Directory Submissions

• manual – if you can spare 5-10 minutes of your time every day then this might be the best solution for your directory link building. Here is a list of some 20.000 free directory submission websites you can submit to. I repeat – do not overdo yourself with submitting to hundreds of sites at once. You want natural link building process in the eyes of search engines. 5-10 submissions per day is perfect for new websites. Later on when you build your website up, you might want to speed up the process a bit.
• software – directory submission software can speed up your link building process on daily basis. One of the oldest and most powerful suites is SubmitEaze. Check the detailed review.

• service – there are lots of services that offer natural link building, and natural directory submission process, but I strongly advise you to never engage into “5000 backlinks in a week” stupidities. You can get ignored or banned from Google. I am not going to recommend any of those – as using those services is on the brim of black-hat SEO. Think of it as gray area. You can find nice services and never get banned, your links will count, everybody happy. But it is unnatural link building.

2. Submitting your articles to article directories

This is the best link building path. It is similar to having your articles in newspapers or magazines. It does two things – it ads value to your web pages and builds links at the same time.

There are 2 types of article submissions

• high end – Like EzineArticles. It is high end article site and I strongly suggest that you completely overwrite your article specially for them. It is one of those high PR websites that have huge impact on your website positioning on search engines if you have backlinks  there. So, make sure your content is unique, written good and specific.
• normal – unlike high end article sites, normal article sites don’t require 100% unique articles. Mostly they require some 400 words and you can have your backlink in few days as soon as it is approved. Just like directory submission, you want consistent article submission, 5-10 per day.

Methods for article submissions

• manual – It can take significant amount of time, but with carefully choosing where you are submitting your articles based on authority it will eventually pay off. Here is free Article Directory List with around 3.000 article directories that you can start submitting your articles to.

• software – Now, there are some nice software suites specialized for article submissions only. Like Brad Callen Article Submitter. If you are writing lots of articles on your website and want to speed up the process of link building then this might be the perfect solution for you. • service – My favorite link building technique is paying some service to do the boring job of article submissions. I must admit, this is the 1th thing I did when I started serious backlinks building when I saw how much time it takes. It is a bit costly process, but it pays out. And once submitted you don’t have to ever pay attention to your articles .Your backlinks are automatically built. Once I found out about site networks, I completely switched over. 3. Link building through site networks

Now this is one of the best ways of link building. But you have to be very careful to choose a good site network. They are all paid unfortunately, and are considered one of the best investments into online business by most marketers.

What they do is basically bring together those that have sites and want content and those that have content and want links. Good networks will not over-distribute your articles and they build links naturally over time.

4. Leaving your links on Blogs

Or blog commenting in other words – works perfect as long as those blogs are do-follow sites. Now, blog commenting is not comment spamming. You do not want to piss off the blog owners and community with silly “Hi, just wanted to tell that your site looks great!” comments with your website keyword as your name. Do not ruin your reputation for the sole purpose of link building.

Those comments will most likely get deleted at some point. If you want to engage in blog commenting I suggest that you actually read the content of the blog and write your opinion.

The best way for link building on blogs from personal experience is finding related but noncompetitive blogs and contacting the blog owners, asking them nicely if they would include your pages links in some of their posts (this only works if your content fulfills or extends the content of their blog)

There are actually software suites that do the job of blog commenting (spamming) and I hate those, so I’m  not even going to name them. I don’t recommentd them for real link building.

5. Leaving your links on forums

Similar to blog commenting link building process, but with higher authority. I do not recommend engaging into forum commenting as it requires too much valuable time to build up your forum reputation, and you can easily get banned for even posting 1 wrong comment.

Other interesting techniques for getting backlinks.

I will not go in depth as there are really numerous ways for quality link building. Specific links give more importance to the search engines equation.

I will just name several very easy ways for getting quality links back to your website:

• Start your own blog – There are many blog services on Internet. It takes only few minutes to set up a blog on Squidoo for example. my favorite link building technique when I have some spare time.
• Get people automatically link to your pages – This is done with creating unique useful content. Make lists of useful things that require some research, offer free surveys to noncompetitive websites related to yours – fulfilling their content, offer people to sign up your newsletter, establish business relationship with related but noncompetitive high authority website… be creative with link building.
• Comment on Yahoo Answers,  Google Groups, and other high authority websites but don’t spam. Write a review on Amazon for related product, swap links with few high authority websites (do not engage in extensive reciprocal link building)…

Link Building summary

Don’ts of Link Building

• Don’t use your website URL as the anchor text – unless really necessary
• Don’t involve your sites with reciprocal linking – it is OK to some extent
• Don’t involve your sites with 3 way linking – it confuses search engines
• Don’t involve yourself with anything related to Black Hat link building (cloaking etc.)
• Don’t use words “click here” for your anchor text – it is dumb
• Don’t get caught up in the “latest craze” of link building – those things come and go – your links too
• Don’t interlink your own sites – unless where relevant
• Don’t do “link bombs” – creating thousands of links per day – very bad way of link building

Do’s of link building

• Do use correct anchor text
• Do point every link to the correct page
• Do be consistent with your link building
• Do build your links naturally over time

Enjoy your link building and automate the process as much as possible. And remember – Consistence in link building will pay off eventually.

Why is on-page optimization so crucial?
Applying proper on-page optimization will not only ensure high ranking of the web page, but can also improve the quality of article making it more appealing for reading. Let me list all the factors for proper on-page optimization:

Title optimization

Title optimization is one of the most important elements for quality on-page optimization. Title should be short but reveal enough information to readers about content of the web page. Title is the 1th thing that search engines index and has the greatest value as such.

Title should be:

• short and descriptive
• easy to spot and appealing for reading
• written to reveal enough information about content optimized for search engines – means that title shouldn’t be longer then 60 characters and has to have your keyword or keywords included for better on-page optimization. For example, if you aim to rank high on search engines for keyword “golf clubs”, you should include “golf clubs” in your title – quality golf clubs, golf clubs for beginners etc. Of course, you don’t want to spam the title like “golf clubs golf clubs golf clubs”. It is unnatural and inadequate for search engines and readers will most likely skip those titles. (on-page optimization)

On-page optimization of meta-tags

Meta tags give information to search engines what your web page is exactly about. They shouldn’t be ignored, specially description tags.

Meta Description tag must be:

• short
• informative
• focused on the content of the page.

Quality short description of page content is what brings visitors to your pages. If it doesn’t exist or is written poorly, there is high probability that your page will be ignored and never visited. Meta Description shows on search engines below title and is extremely important for on-page optimization process.

One more crucial thing about meta tags and on-page optimization – besides accentuating what is on the page, it is of utmost importance to include your keywords in meta description.

All 3 meta tags should never be ignored:

• Title meta tag – your post title (60 characters max)
• Description meta tag -focused short information of your page content (160 characters max)
• Post tags (keywords) – a list of relevant keywords separated with comma (5-10 keywords is optimum)

The importance of HTML tags for better on-page optimization

It is essential to offer the visitors quality content that is easy to read with all relevant words and sentences extracted. There are several HTML tags that can do the job. Those would be H1, H2, H3, bold, italic, underline, quote… Text marked with H1 tag is the most important to search engines, because it points out the most relevant information about your page content.

Accentuating:

• Header 1 – it is used to define the most important parts of the page. It is usually marked in title or beginning of content
• Header 2 and 3 – should be used as subtitles of various sections
• Text styles – Bold, Italic and Underline – used for marking important words within the content (on-page optimization)

Optimization of keywords

Website pages should be optimized for reading and for search engines at the same time. Overuse of keywords can make content unreadable, and Google “spiders” will notice keyword spamming and might ignore it.  So, it is very important to create balance between those two optimizations.

Important factors for on-page optimization of keywords:

• Keyword research – the first thing that should be done. Basic for proper on-page optimization. To ensure usage of quality keywords that are actually typed into Google, it is important to do keyword research. You can see how strong your competition is and how many webmasters are competing for that same keyword too.

There are several great tools that can guide you through choosing the right keywords.  AdWords keyword tool is free, requires registration only. Or you can try one of professional keyword research software suites like Market Samurai or Traffic Travis that offer free trial (Traffic Travis 3.0 is totally free for download).

• Keyword density – optimum keyword density throughout the article is about 2-5%. You need to be very careful not to sacrifice your content for the sake of those 2 percents and better “on-page optimization”. What is important is that you assign H1 and H2 tags to your keywords and mention your keyword in the first and last sentence. LSI or Latent Semantic Indexing is what Google checks. It represents a relationship between your words and phrases based on huge Google database. So, don’t spam keywords in every sentence just to improve on-page optimization.

Google seems not have high keyword density required for determining your on-page optimization, but Yahoo has much higher. You can see that with same content with higher keyword density you are positioned much higer on Yahoo then on Google. I beleive that you shouldn’t sacrifice the content for “better on-page optimization”.

• Keyword synonyms – Using synonyms and words similar to your keywords is of particular importance for good on-page optimization. Google implemented semantic web that includes slang and determines if other words mentioned in the text are related to your keywords.

• Long tail keywords – those are essentially your keywords with some word added in front or after. Those are words that are usually easier to rank with, because of less competition. It is always good to include them not only for easier ranking, but you can really dig out nice keywords that way. For example: if your main keyword is “cat furniture”- some of the long tail keywords would be – “designer cat furniture”, “cat furniture on-sale”, “cheap cat furniture”… etc.

Link optimization

With link on-page optimization it is important to pay special attention on internal and outbound links and provide visitors with quality navigation throughout your website. Do not be afraid to implement outbound links to your texts if they help with fulfilling your content.

Crucial elements for link optimization:

It is always good to have links as anchor text when links point to other pages. Usage of adequate keywords for outbound links is essential for nice on-page optimization. Nice and clean internal link structure with carefully chosen anchor text will for sure give the best results and flawless on-page SEO. If you use CMS, then permalinks are ideal. In that case keywords/titles become links automatically and you get quality results from search engines.

Picture optimization

If page has significant number of pictures, they need to be optimized to be noticed by search engines too. A picture might be understandable for visitors without explanations, but that’s not the case with search engines. So called “Google spider” cannot see pictures, it just reads text. That’s why we need to give meaning to pictures by using some special tags to get better on-page optimization.

Important things for picture optimization:

• Alt tag - or alternate text is a text that shows up when you are scrolling over the picture. It has to be short and adequately describe the picture. It is smart to include your keywords in alt-tags, mostly for search engines sake and better on-page optimization.
• Picture title - it is good to have understandable picture title and not some “DSCxxxxx.jpg” or any combination seemingly without meaning. Alt  tag and picture title should be the same.
• Picture link - if you want a picture to have a link, then link should have your keyword included too.
• Size – try to shrink image size to minimum for better performance (load time) of your pages. That is considered very important on-page optimization factor because search engines monitor how fast particular pages load.

Spellchecking

I recommend rereading your post prior to publishing and running spellcheck and grammar check. You can do spellcheck online for free and you will be sure no silly words or sentences appear on your website. If you want to get visitors to come back and read your texts as you publish them, then at least do a spell check.

This is not a part of on-page optimization process but cannot hurt running one right before publishing.

Keyword research is the pillar of Internet marketing and no serious marketer will even consider making a website without deep market research and keyword analysis.
